After many weeks of request, we have finally relented to demand that our podcast be available via MP3! You'll find the button for the file underneath the cut. To match the demand, we are also putting our past episodes on Blip (because I want to keep that account around), so this podcast is falling in line with many others.

Now that doesn't mean that we will be changing formats here on WVNN. But, as I have said, a rising tide lifts all boats. And regardless of different opinions on the subject, Telltale is a part of that tide. So, onto the main attraction! The Wolf Among Us is inspired by a Vertigo Comics fantasy comic called Fables. Well before it was cool to do, the comic followed several fairy tale character who have been chased out of their fantasy world and are trying to survive in New York City in a community known as Fabletown (not subtle at all).
From my understanding, the comic series is more in line with the popular 'urban fantasy' trend these days rather than the 'noir' feel of the game. Either way, our hero for the tale is the formidable Sheriff Bigby Wolf: who was once the Big Bad Wolf if the name wasn't a dead giveaway (again, subtlety). As the sole law enforcement in the community , Bigby not only has the task of keeping the immortal beings in check but also to keep their existence out of the public eye. Like we see in the games, that isn't always easy. Now, I won't be going back and discussing Episodes 1 and 2, but it should go without saying that you should play Episodes 1 and 2 shouldn't it? Good. So, strap yourselves in people: it's time to review Telltale's The Wolf Among Us Episode 3: A Crooked Mile. Oh and there are some spoilers once we get into the review proper. YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED! I've had this one on the front burner for a few weeks now after the development team, Pixel Fade, asked for my opinion on their demo. The game attempts to merge two different, and popular, Japanese mediums: sports manga and slice-of-life. These types of mergers aren't rare, but whether or not they succeed is a completely different story. Currently, Kendo Crush is in the middle of a Kickstarter campaign and has under half of their requested $12,000 (Canadian) budget. It boasts not only a vocal cast, but original soundtrack and 'an abundance of fanservice'....yay....
Well JesuOtaku already gave the demo a thorough reaming on a impromptu Livestream (although that video hasn't been posted anywhere else!), so surely there is nothing else I can add right? Wrong! Welcome back to You Asked For It: the only feature on the Internet where ripping apart hopes and dreams is just another Tuesday! So it looks like this is going to be a thing now, so let's talk about it!
With the success of the Starfighter: Eclipse Kickstarter and the previous success of MegaTokyo, it is clear that webcomics have potential to be major EVN titles. I can say, without patting myself on the back, that this is something that has been on the horizon for years now. As I have said on the podcast, between the webcomics and Telltale Games, it is only a matter of time before more developers start looking at this medium as a profitable way to expand their audience and the life of their work. But I have spoken at length on that, so I won't bore you again. After all, if we're going to see more webcomic creators make the jump from comics to gaming, then it's about time some raging Internet asshat begins speculating on when we're going to see the GOOD ones make that leap. Ah yes fans of MegaTokyo and Starfighter: I went there. That isn't to say both are bad per se, however the creme has yet to rise to the top here. There are fantastic titles out there that could easily make the leap: some still active, others on hiatus and still some finished entirely. Regardless, as a fan of both mediums, I figured that now would be the proper time to shine a spotlight on some of my personal favorite webcomics that could also be visual novels. Oh and, to be clear, this is all my opinion and I haven't read every single webcomic in existence. So, if you don't see what you like on the list, that sounds like a problem outside of my department! With all of that said, let's take a look at the Top 5 Webcomics That Should Have A Visual Novel! One thing that I've always loved about the EVN Community is how partnerships are formed. Even bad games takes months, if not years, to go from concept to final product and the different members of a team aren't necessarily sitting in the same room every day. So the connections that form the foundation run a bit deeper than you can put a dollar amount on, otherwise the various teams that make up this community wouldn't get done. I haven't completely figured it out yet, but I know beyond the creativity and talent we have here, the Power of Teamwork ( for a lack of better words), is something that we should not only be proud of, but new creators looking to form a partnership to create an EVN should try to learn from.
I knew when I planned out these April Interviews I wanted to talk to a team everyone here has seen in action, but may not know much about. Like another very productive partnership, the artist and the writer are from two different sides of the world: KittyKatStarGal from Canada and Deji-Chan from Chile. But the divide only seems to make their team stronger...I'll have to make a note of that for further research. Both work together not only for Winter Wolves, but under their own initiative to create one of my Most Anticipated EVNs for 2014: Autumn's Journey. I hope you guys have fun reading the Interview! I did! Hello all! Here comes JP trying something NEW AND CRAZY!
It's nothing immediately permanent, but considering that we don't have a full paper to fill up for the news, I wanted to experiment with the format and try to give it to you guys in a quicker and more social media-friendly way. So, for the month of April, you'll be getting your weekly news via YouTube! It's less than a minute so feel free to pass it along to those curious about this ever-growing genre. And NaNoRenO is in the books! The completed projects are beginning to trickle out and I'm hard at work on how we'll be celebrating their releases. B) It should be a blast so keep an eye on this very website. For the immediate future, here's what is out so far!
Welcome everyone to April! While it may not feel like Spring depending on your location in the world (looking at you Canada), here at the HQ we want to enjoy this little middle ground between the Center-Of-The-Earth Heat we'll be getting in a few months and the Frozen Tundra that was Winter. So this month, you won't just be getting one Interview; you'll be getting FOUR. It'll be a mixture of familiar faces and new interests: with each story reflecting what makes the EVN Community such a creative place.
So let's get started with an incredible talent. Returning just for NaNoRenO; Auro-Cyanide! Enjoy! |
