Written By: JP Edited by: Youko the Hexogonal Developers: Lupiesoft Platforms: PC, Mac and Linux Genre: Supernatural, Yuri (GxG) Release Date: February 16, 2014 Official Website | So, do I strike anyone who can enjoy a dumb, guilty pleasure for what it is? …Yeah, I didn’t think so either. Look, I’m not going to go full Snob and say there is no place for that type of entertainment (trust me, there is). It would shock people to find what lurks in the back of my movie collection (yes Michael Bay has a home there). Guilty pleasures are a release valve for the human mind, allowing it to shut down and just enjoy something that appeals to the basics instincts. Without it, we’d be in a world full of neurotic intellectuals; although Christopher Nolan would’ve won an Oscar by now…okay that world of neurotics doesn’t sound too bad after all. That said, The Reject Demon: Toko is yet another installment in EVN guilty pleasures. But, even with that, it has to fit into the lines it set for itself in order for the reader to fully enjoy the absurdity of it all. So the question isn’t whether or not this game is good by my definition of ‘good’, but rather by its definition of good. What are those definitions? ‘Are the characters fun and entertaining enough to distract from the absurdity of the story?’, ‘Is the threat a viable one?’, ‘Do we want Toko to succeed in her fulfilling her destiny?’, and the most important one, ‘Is the relationship between Toko and Nadia appealing?’ Well, these are interesting questions to answer. So, let’s do our best to answer them together! |

So –awkward wave– Hi guys.
Usually this is Will’s gig, but with the big guy on temporary hiatus I will be pinch hitting in giving you the news! And in the weeks leading up to NaNoRenO 2014 there is a lot of exciting news coming out of the community to cover. So this week, news from several big names and a few demos that caught my eye. Shall we get started? I have to apologize to you guys because I had anticipated flooding you all with updates. However, that has been delayed due to unfortunate circumstances behind the scenes here at VNs Now HQ. To that end, I felt it best to bring everyone up to speed on the situation before we move into NaNoRenO because this type of behavior is the worst o not just our little community, but the gaming industry at large. We've seen it with Angry Joe and TotalBiscuit, now a much smaller entity is determined to not only silence any critique, but also to threaten decent people whose only crime was asking a question.
I am not a decent man. I try to be, but I am not. I have said things in ways that I've regretted and have paid a hefty cost for it. However, I have come to the conclusion that this report must be delivered to you all, in full, for reasons that will become clear as we get through it. This is a full and complete report of the lengths some people will go to in the name of their own vanity. Some names have been redacted and are protected by free press laws here in the United States while others are pseudonyms of peoples who, by legal right, do not need to reveal their true identities to the public. All other information is protected by both national and international law and all who commented as a part of this story did so of their own will with the full knowledge of the rights of VNs Now to publish their comments. Finally Will Wellemeyer contributed to the tail end of this report, while the main research and writing was done by your's truly: JP the 3rd. With all of that said, it's time to talk about the resumed adventures I am having with Grant Wilde and the team of Always the Same Blue Sky. ....What do you mean that's not my office? OF COURSE IT IS! Or it will be...one day...
ANYWAY! I am always looking for those who want to join and help grow this fine corner of the Internet and we're opening it back up to new volunteers! To be clear right off the bat, these are not paid positions. If they were, that really would be my office. For now we just appreciate your support in helping us get the message out and contribute to the conversation of this fascinating genre of gaming. If any of the volunteer spots interest you, please send a sample review and brief description of yourself to [email protected]! Check below the cut to see what's open! Valentine's Day is for flowers and chocolate right? Well sure, those are good and wonderful things, but so are visual novels. There are some on sale right now! Remember all that Valentine's candy will not be on sale until AFTER the day has passed. For starters we have a rather nice little selection on sale on Steam today only: And if you want even more options, WinterWolves is having a 30% Off sale on all games except for Roommates, which has just been made available in a pre-order beta form. Get some updates on upcoming projects and snag the discount code here. The discount is not set to work with bundles, so add each title from a bundle individually to your cart to get the 30% off for all of them. Well, get to buying some games and spreading some love people!
So, this is a thing! I've been in contact with a certain Chris Tenarium for the past few weeks and we're doing something of a trial run for a new, potential partnership a la That Guy With The Glasses. To test those waters, we will be simulcasting his play through of the expanding juggernaut that is Pyrite Heart! Enjoy!
And feel free to leave feedback and thoughts! We'll be looking at those to determine if this is a good idea! Hey everyone, ready for some news and updates? No? Too bad. Tired of pictures? Fine. How about a video for a change! There is a new trailer for Starswirl Academy, by Zap Apple Project. A visual novel about students and their life at the prestigious Starswirl Academy. Will they be able to find friendship and make it through the first year? It was reissued after the team got a notice from Hasbro to change the names and other aspects of their project due to use of Hasbro’s My Little Pony property. The trailer shows the new names, is voiced, and even has a short animated scene. The demo was reissued as well and is also available for Windows, Android, Linux, and Mac.
However, for anyone following me on Twitter this you know that excitement turned to boredom, which dived into hate and finally crashed into a flaming pit of expletives.
I'm going to go ahead an put this out now: if you want to play this game, don't read this review. There are necessary spoilers I have to include in order to make my point about the game's defects. For everyone else, please get your comfiest pillow and place it directly in front of your desk. That way when the head-desking starts, you won't cause inoperable damage to your frontal lobe. And they say I just a cynical asshole who doesn't care about people! |
